Stellantis Unveils Driverless Delivery Van With No Cab

Imagine a delivery van with no place for a human to sit. That's exactly what Stellantis unveiled at the IAA Transportation show in Germany, and it's turning heads for all the right reasons.

The BOW (Box-on-Wheels) looks nothing like traditional delivery vans. It's a compact green box on four wheels, topped with cameras and sensors instead of a windshield and driver's seat.

Stellantis developed the autonomous electric vehicle with UQI Robotics to rethink delivery from the ground up. Because no driver needs to fit inside, every inch of space can carry packages instead.

The BOW isn't ready for city streets yet. Stellantis is testing it first in controlled environments like factories, hospitals, and airports where routes are predictable and obstacles are limited.

This approach makes sense for companies learning to trust autonomous technology. An airport vehicle following mapped routes faces far fewer surprises than one navigating crowded city blocks with pedestrians, cyclists, and construction zones.

The company isn't sharing battery size, range, or speed yet because BOW remains a development project. What matters now is proving the concept works in real delivery operations, not just tech demonstrations.

The Ripple Effect

Traditional delivery requires organizing schedules around when drivers can work. Autonomous vehicles could eventually let companies focus purely on when packages need moving, potentially making deliveries faster and more flexible.

The partnership between Stellantis (bringing commercial vehicle expertise) and UQI Robotics (providing autonomous technology) shows how collaboration speeds innovation. Together they're exploring not just if driverless delivery works, but where it makes business sense first.

BOW stood out among dozens of electric vans at the transportation show because most others simply swapped gas engines for batteries. This vehicle asked a bigger question: if humans aren't driving, why should delivery vehicles look the same at all?

Stellantis has no production timeline yet, treating BOW as an experiment in possibilities. But the vehicle represents a shift in thinking about urban logistics and sustainable transportation.
