Sydney Pilot Tests AI to Bring Solar to 2.5M Apartments

Apartment dwellers are getting shut out of the clean energy revolution, but an Australian pilot program just cracked the code on bringing solar power to millions of renters.

Researchers at the University of New South Wales in Sydney are testing a game-changing system that uses artificial intelligence to share rooftop solar and battery power across apartment buildings. The technology solves a frustrating problem: while homeowners install solar panels by the thousands, apartment residents watch from the sidelines with no roof access and no say in building upgrades.

The numbers tell the story. Just 3.5% of apartment dwellers in New South Wales have access to rooftop solar, even though one in three residents lives in apartments. Across Australia, 2.5 million people in apartments can't tap into solar savings that their neighbors enjoy.

The new system, called a Modular Power Portal System, acts like a smart traffic controller for electricity. It predicts when each apartment will need power, coordinates solar panels and batteries on the building's roof, and balances energy flows in real time so everyone benefits.

Companies Voltval and JT Solar Technology developed the hardware, while UNSW researchers built an advanced AI layer that makes the whole system smarter. The Australian government believed in the idea enough to back it with an $830,000 grant.

Associate Professor Huadong Mo leads the research team and sees massive potential. His projections show the system could slash operating costs by 30%, making shared solar financially attractive for building owners who previously saw it as too expensive or complicated.

The pilot is testing the technology in real Sydney apartment buildings right now, with partners including property management companies and clean energy firms working together to prove the concept works at scale.

The Ripple Effect

This breakthrough matters far beyond Sydney. Cities worldwide face the same challenge as populations shift to denser housing. If apartment buildings can efficiently share solar power, millions more people gain access to cheaper, cleaner electricity without needing to own a house.

The technology also removes a major barrier to Australia's clean energy goals. When a third of the population lives in apartments, the country can't hit its climate targets by only installing solar on single-family homes.

Early results will shape how other Australian cities and countries approach apartment solar, potentially unlocking a market that developers and policymakers have struggled with for years.
