Texas 3-Year-Old Unlocks Door, Saves Mom During Seizure

When Aidan Wilkie suffered a grand mal seizure at home in Rusk, Texas, the only other person there was her three-year-old daughter, Noemi "Emi" Vatavuk.

Most toddlers would panic, but Emi remembered something important her family had taught her. She grabbed her mom's phone and FaceTimed her grandparents, who were 700 miles away in Georgia.

Her grandparents quickly contacted 911 while staying on the line with Emi. The little girl stayed right beside her mother, gently rubbing her hair and whispering reassurance.

"The only thing I do remember from everything was the fact that she was rubbing my hair," Wilkie later recalled. "I could hear briefly, 'Mommy, it's gonna be okay.'"

Then came Emi's biggest challenge yet. Paramedics were on their way, but the apartment door was locked from the inside with a deadbolt far above her reach.

Her grandfather guided her through the 911 dispatcher as Emi dragged a chair to the door and climbed up. She stretched as high as she could, working to turn the deadbolt.

"Oh my goodness. She's doing so good," the dispatcher said, listening to the determined toddler work. After several attempts, Emi succeeded in unlocking the door.

When EMT Tim Spurgeon and his team arrived, they kept hearing "She's here! She's here!" from neighbors. Emi then led the first responders to her apartment so they could help her mom.

Spurgeon described her actions as "very courageous and very brave." UT Health East Texas later honored Emi with a certificate, a teddy bear, and a stethoscope to celebrate her heroism.

During the emergency call, Emi's small voice could be heard asking, "I helped mommy?" Her family reassured her that yes, she had helped mommy tremendously. That simple question captures everything beautiful about this story: a child's pure desire to help someone she loves, combined with the life-saving lessons her family had taught her.

Wilkie knows exactly how lucky she is. "She is for sure my hero above anything else," she said of her daughter.

In a moment of crisis, one brave little girl proved that heroes come in all sizes.
