Virginia Chef Drives Elderly Woman Home, Then Buys Her Lunch

A Virginia chef turned a disappointed restaurant customer into a friend when he went far beyond his job description to help an elderly woman get home safely.

Miss Duke arrived at Deep Run Roadhouse's new Henrico location on a Sunday afternoon, expecting her usual barbecue meal. Instead, she found Chef Andrew Griffin preparing a restaurant that wasn't open for business yet.

When Griffin explained the situation, Miss Duke told him she'd have to walk home. Griffin immediately offered her a ride instead.

But as they climbed into his van, Griffin started thinking about his own grandmother. He wondered what her life had been like as she aged, and whether Miss Duke had food waiting for her at home.

"She probably didn't have food in her refrigerator," Griffin recalled thinking. That simple thought changed his plan.

Instead of driving straight to her house, Griffin took Miss Duke to a nearby restaurant. He bought her lunch and made sure she enjoyed a meal before taking her home safely.

Griffin's boss, Deep Run Roadhouse owner Paul Hubbard, wasn't surprised by the gesture. He told Griffin the act of kindness reflected how he treats everyone at the restaurant every day.

"I couldn't be more proud of you," Hubbard said. "It really tells us what kind of character you have and how much you care about your people."

Local news station 12 On Your Side surprised Griffin with its Acts of Kindness Award, plus $300 in cash and a restaurant gift card. But Griffin's real reward was knowing Miss Duke didn't have to walk home hungry.

Sometimes the brightest moments come from the simplest choice to care about someone else's day.
