12-Year-Old Walks 500km, Raises $423K for Sick Kids

When 12-year-old Dusty Langby spotted the flags on top of Parliament House after walking 500 kilometers, his entire crew nearly started crying because they knew they'd finally made it.

The young Australian from Warren, NSW, completed his epic 16-day trek to Canberra this week, raising an incredible $423,000 for Little Wings. The charity provides free flights for seriously ill children in rural areas who need specialist medical care in bigger cities.

Dusty knows firsthand how valuable these flights are. Both he and his brother have flown from Warren to Sydney with Little Wings for specialist appointments, and he wanted more families to have the same opportunity.

"The pilots and the volunteers are such kind people, and I wanted to help," Dusty said after arriving in the capital city.

His journey began on August 30 with a small crew: his mum Sarah, a local nurse, and two Little Wings staff members. They walked between 19 and 55 kilometers each day, braving everything from scorching sunshine to surprise rain showers that left them soaked after scrambling into their wet weather gear.

The hardest part wasn't the distance. Dusty normally runs everywhere, so learning to slow down and just walk took serious adjustment since his training started back in January. He went through four pairs of shoes preparing for the challenge.

To pass the long hours on the road, the team chatted constantly at first, then fell into companionable silence, then got into a groove with music. Sometimes Dusty's friends joined for stretches of the walk. Other times, he daydreamed about upgrades for his 1999 Toyota Hilux ute.

"I was just thinking about that: how can I fix my ute," he laughed.

What makes this story extra special isn't just the massive amount raised or the physical challenge conquered. It's the overwhelming support Dusty received along the way. Every town they passed through welcomed them with open arms. People lined the streets cheering. Pubs and inns offered food. The Lake Cargelligo school even delivered a full Woolworths grocery order to keep them fueled.

"Every community we entered just welcomed us so gracefully," Sarah Langby said. "We are just amazed."

Remarkably, Dusty arrived in Canberra with zero blisters and feeling "really good," though he noted his mum and the rest of the team weren't faring quite as well.

Now comes the big meeting. Dusty has an appointment with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to discuss rural pediatric care and make his pitch: match every dollar of the $423,000 raised. If successful, that would nearly double the funds available to help rural families access critical medical care.

After the meeting, the Langby family plans to decompress with some camping, fishing, and motorbike riding, taking time to reflect on what this determined 12-year-old just accomplished for kids across rural Australia.
