1,200 Students Graduate Allan Hancock College in California

Air horns blared and families cheered as 1,196 graduates celebrated their achievements Friday at Allan Hancock College in Santa Maria, California. The class earned 1,775 associate degrees and 1,427 certificates across 116 different majors.

Nearly half the graduating class participated in the Hancock Promise program, which offers two years of free tuition to local high school students. The program has opened doors for hundreds of students who might not otherwise afford college.

Amal Qasam, 22, moved to California from Yemen two years ago with dreams of a better life. Learning English while adjusting to college proved challenging, but her family's encouragement kept her going.

"My family is the best. They encourage me in everything in life," Qasam said before walking across the stage to receive her liberal arts degree. She balanced learning a new language, adapting to a different culture, and completing her coursework simultaneously.

Adrianne Ainsworth, 44, waited 25 years to fulfill a promise she made to herself. Her psychology and behavioral science degree represents more than academic achievement; it represents refusing to give up on a dream.

"It's more than worth it to reawaken lost dreams," Ainsworth said. Her graduation cap carried a simple but powerful message: "In the darkness, I found the light." She plans to continue her education by pursuing a bachelor's degree through Western Governors University.

Graduates personalized their ceremonies with decorated caps, colorful cultural sashes, and flower leis representing their backgrounds. Some students walked alongside their children, while one graduate crossed the stage accompanied by a support dog.

The ceremony showcased what education really means: second chances, family sacrifice, and the courage to start over. Students from different cultures, ages, and backgrounds proved that it's never too late to pursue your goals.

College Superintendent Kevin Walthers reminded graduates that commencement marks a beginning, not an ending. "Don't wait to feel ready," he told the crowd. "You are ready."

The stadium erupted with cultural gritos, whistles, and applause as each name echoed through the speakers. Some graduates waved flags representing their heritage, while others displayed messages about future career goals.

From a young woman learning English while earning her degree to a mother of 44 finally completing her 25-year journey, these graduates prove that persistence pays off.
