A California teenager turned his spelling dreams into reality at the 2026 Scripps National Spelling Bee, proving that persistence pays off in the most spectacular way.

Shrey Parikh, 14, from Rancho Cucamonga won the championship on Thursday evening after correctly spelling 32 words in just 90 seconds during the lightning-fast spell-off round. He defeated New Jersey's Ishan Gupta, who spelled 25 words in the same timeframe, to claim the prestigious Scripps Cup.

This wasn't Shrey's first time on the national stage. The determined teen competed as a finalist in 2024, using that experience to fuel his preparation for this year's victory.

The three-day competition at DAR Constitution Hall in Washington brought together 247 spellers from all 50 states, US territories, and five countries including the Bahamas, Canada, Ghana, Nigeria, and the United Arab Emirates. Nine exceptional spellers made it to Thursday's finals, but Shrey's speed and accuracy set him apart when it mattered most.
