19 Monks Walk 2,300 Miles for Peace Across America

✨ Faith Restored

Buddhist monks are completing a 100-day journey from Texas to Washington D.C., stopping at state capitols to inspire peace. Thousands braved freezing temperatures to walk alongside them, continuing a tradition that began in post-war Cambodia.

When 19 Buddhist monks set out from Fort Worth, Texas on October 26, they weren't protesting. They were walking 2,300 miles to awaken something quieter: the peace already living inside each of us.

The monks from the Huong Dao Vipassana Bhavana Center chose the hard path. They're walking across America, stopping at state capitols and historic landmarks along the way to Washington D.C.

"We walk not to protest, but to awaken the peace that already lives within each of us," spiritual leader Bhikkhu Pannakara explained. The walk reminds us that unity and kindness start within, then radiate outward to families and communities.

By Day 100, winter had arrived in full force. Snow blanketed Richmond, Virginia, but thousands of people still filled the streets to walk with the monks and their rescue dog Aloka.

"The temperature was low, but the warmth in every heart was overwhelming," the Walk for Peace team shared on Instagram. The monks were moved that so many people braved the cold just to be present and share in peace.

This walk draws inspiration from a powerful moment in history. In 1992, after Cambodia signed its Peace Accords, spiritual leader Maha Ghosananda led refugees on a healing journey through their war-torn homeland.

"Peace is growing in Cambodia, slowly, step by step," Ghosananda said at the time. "Each step is a meditation. Each step is a prayer."

That first walk transformed dangerous mobility into mindful action. During the Khmer Rouge era, walking meant forced relocation and landmines, but Ghosananda reclaimed it as an act of peace.

The tradition continues today in Cambodia's annual Peace Walk Dhammayietra. Even in conflict zones, warring factions have granted monks safe passage.

In August 2024, when 2,569 Cambodian monks marched just one mile calling for peace between Cambodia and Thailand, their numbers drew global attention. Thailand released 18 detained Cambodian soldiers after 155 days in captivity, and the ceasefire still holds.

The Ripple Effect

The monks teach that our suffering comes from wandering minds, lost in pasts we cannot change and futures we cannot control. But peace isn't somewhere distant.

"Peace is right here," the Walk for Peace team explained. "It has always been right here, waiting for us like a warm home with the door open."

We can return to that home simply by returning to our breath, feeling the gentle rhythm that's been holding us all along.

The monks are nearing Washington D.C. now, having walked through winter cold and found warmth in thousands of open hearts along the way.
