20 Uplifting Smithsonian Exhibits Open in 2026

The world's largest museum group is giving visitors more reasons to explore in 2026, with 20 new exhibitions opening across its 21 museums and the National Zoo. From contemporary art installations to historical retrospectives, this year promises something inspiring for every interest.

Several exhibitions mark major milestones for the nation. As America celebrates its 250th birthday, the Smithsonian Castle reopens Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day with "American Aspirations," while the National Museum of American History showcases 250 significant objects from its collection.

The National Museum of African American History and Culture presents "At the Vanguard," featuring over 100 objects from five historically Black colleges and universities. The exhibition tells stories of innovations from schools like Florida A&M University and Tuskegee University that have enriched American life.

Contemporary art takes center stage at multiple venues. The Smithsonian American Art Museum hosts "Nick Cave: Mammoth," where the renowned artist explores American history through immersive installations featuring crafted woolly mammoth hides and bones, plus a beaded curtain depicting his Missouri childhood farm.

The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden showcases "Big Things for Big Rooms" through July 2027, displaying rarely seen large-scale works from trailblazers like Sam Gilliam and Robert Irwin alongside contemporary artists. Five pieces appear at the museum for the first time.

The Ripple Effect

Music lovers can explore how visual design shapes the listening experience at Cooper Hewitt's "Art of Noise," featuring concert posters, album covers and music player designs from February through August. The National Museum of African Art celebrates LGBTQ+ voices with "Here: Pride and Belonging in African Art," showcasing nearly 60 works exploring intimacy, faith and family through African perspectives.

The National Portrait Gallery's Outwin 2025 competition, delayed by the government shutdown, displays 34 portraits by 35 artists from across America. Winner Kameron Neal receives $25,000 and will create a portrait of a notable living American for the permanent collection.

Major renovations also complete this year. The National Air and Space Museum finishes its transformation for its 50th anniversary, while the Hirshhorn wraps up its multiyear project.
