A crocodile ancestor built like a racing greyhound has been formally named as a new species, 54 years after its bones were first pulled from an English quarry. Galahadosuchus jonesi sprinted across what is now Gloucestershire 215 million years ago on long, slender legs, looking nothing like the low-slung crocs we know today.
The fossil sat unrecognized in the Natural History Museum's collection for over five decades. Collector Ron Croucher found it in Cromhall Quarry in 1969, but everyone assumed it belonged to the only other known land-dwelling croc relative from the region.

The bones tell the story of a speed demon. Galahadosuchus had elongated wrist bones, tightly bunched hand bones, and an upright stance perfectly designed for running. Its metatarsal-to-femur ratio suggests it may have outpaced even its cousin species Terrestrisuchus, making it one of the fastest predators in Late Triassic Britain.

Back then, southwest England looked radically different. Instead of green countryside, the landscape featured rugged highlands surrounded by hot, arid plains. Galahadosuchus navigated this vanished world on four legs, hunting across terrain that would eventually be swallowed by underground cavities and preserved as fossils.
The discovery adds crucial detail to our understanding of life before the Triassic-Jurassic mass extinction. This catastrophic event, triggered by volcanic eruptions and climate chaos, wiped out huge numbers of species.
