32 Youth Teams Compete in Lagos Memorial Tournament

Thirty-two youth football teams kicked off a weeklong tournament in Lagos this Monday, competing for trophies while honoring the legacy of Nigeria's first Premier of the Western Region.

The 12th edition of the Obafemi and H.I.D. Awolowo Memorial Youth Football Tournament launched at Lekki Playground with 16 boys' teams (Under-10) and 16 girls' teams (Under-17). Teams traveled from across Southwest Nigeria for the competition, which marks what would have been Obafemi Awolowo's 117th birthday.

The opening matches featured Young Boys Football Academy of Lagos facing Otta Babes Football Academy from Ogun State in the boys' category. In the girls' division, United Queens FC from Ibadan took on Marry Queens FC of Lagos.

The Obafemi Awolowo Foundation has supported the tournament since its launch 12 years ago, with Value Jet Airline stepping up as this year's sponsor. Match coordinator Aliu Ganiu praised the foundation's commitment and promised stakeholders the most competitive edition yet.

The Ripple Effect

This tournament does more than crown champions. It creates opportunities for young athletes who might otherwise never get spotted by scouts or coaches, particularly the girls competing in a country where women's football still fights for recognition.

Twelve years of consistent support means hundreds of young players have now experienced organized competitive football. Some have gone on to join academies and clubs, turning childhood dreams into real pathways.
