4 Astronauts Launch Historic Return to Moon This Week

After more than half a century, humanity is returning to the Moon with a crew that reflects how far we've come both in space and on Earth.

NASA's Artemis 2 mission is set to launch as soon as Wednesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, carrying four astronauts on a 10-day journey around the Moon. The crew includes Christina Koch, who will become the first woman to travel to the Moon, and Victor Glover, who will be the first Black person to make the journey.

Commander Reid Wiseman, a former naval aviator, will lead the mission alongside pilot Glover and mission specialist Koch. Canadian fighter pilot Jeremy Hansen rounds out the crew, becoming the first non-American to fly around the Moon.

The mission marks a major milestone in NASA's Artemis program, which aims to establish a permanent human presence on the Moon and eventually pave the way for Mars exploration. Unlike the solo Apollo missions of the 1960s and 70s, Artemis represents a collaborative effort involving private companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, plus international partners.

The crew will fly aboard the Orion spacecraft, launched atop NASA's powerful 321-foot SLS rocket. After initial safety checks in Earth orbit, they'll head toward the Moon, conducting tests and experiments along the way.

The astronauts will fly over the Moon's far side, temporarily losing contact with Earth as they break Apollo 13's distance record. They'll help NASA scout landing sites for Artemis 4, scheduled for 2028, which will touch down at the Moon's unexplored south pole.

Their return journey will use the Moon's own gravity to slingshot them back toward Earth. After a carefully angled reentry through the atmosphere, parachutes will slow their descent before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean off California.

This mission represents more than technological achievement. By including a woman and person of color in this historic crew, NASA is showing that space exploration now welcomes everyone with the skill and courage to reach for the stars.
