40-Year-Old Kids Book Becomes Amazon Bestseller Overnight

Elissa Guralnick and Paul Levitt spent decades watching their children's books lose money, but a viral TikTok video just changed everything.

The two authors published The Weighty Word Book in 1985, a cleverly illustrated guide that teaches vocabulary through memorable stories. Every time they released a new book, Guralnick's husband would ask, "How much is this one going to cost us?"

Fast forward 40 years. TikToker Eli McCann posted a video about searching for a book his eighth-grade teacher, Mrs. Yates, once read to his class. He remembered gorgeous illustrations and clever wordplay, like a story about an animal who made a dress from gray curtains to impress friends while eating, teaching the word "ingratiate" through the phrase "in gray she ate."

McCann had been looking for this book for 30 years. Within hours of posting, commenters identified it as The Weighty Word Book, and relatives of the authors celebrated in the comments.

The story gets better. Mrs. Yates, now in her mid-80s, saw the video and replied with her own TikTok, holding the original book and opening to the pages McCann remembered. She corrected one detail: the animal was a rhinoceros, not an elephant.

People flooded Amazon to buy the book. "The response was hilarious, and miraculous," Guralnick told Denver 7. "The book overnight became a bestseller on Amazon."

The publisher immediately sent the book for reprinting to meet demand. Sadly, third coauthor Douglas Burger passed away two years ago, but Guralnick and Levitt still meet weekly and watched their creation finally succeed together.

"The number of sales today made me believe in magic," Levitt said. But the bestseller status isn't what matters most to them. It's seeing their kids and relatives celebrate this unexpected triumph.
