7 Local Students Named National Merit Semifinalists

Seven talented students from Indiana and Kentucky just got life-changing news: they're National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists.

Viktor Aylor from Batesville, Indiana, and six Kentucky students (Takeru Kyle from Simon Kenton, Zoe Lau and Ian Tran from Cooper, and Trisha Maheshwari, Sara Merryman, and Vasavi Pinninti from Ryle) earned spots among more than 16,000 Semifinalists nationwide. These high school seniors now have the chance to compete for about 6,700 scholarships worth approximately $24 million.

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation selects students based on their academic skills, accomplishments, and potential for success in college. More than 15,000 of the current Semifinalists are expected to advance to Finalist status in February.

The Ripple Effect

This achievement represents more than just scholarship potential for seven students. It showcases the strength of education in local communities and the dedication of teachers, families, and mentors who helped these young people reach this milestone.

The ripple extends beyond individual success. About 120 corporations, 140 colleges and universities, and the National Merit organization itself will offer three types of scholarships starting this spring.

Every Finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships awarded on a state basis. Corporate-sponsored awards will support about 700 students who meet specific criteria, like being children of company employees. Roughly 3,500 college-sponsored scholarships will go to Finalists attending participating institutions.

Winners will be announced between April and July 2027. For these seven local students and thousands of others nationwide, months of anticipation lie ahead as they wait to learn if their hard work translates into financial support for their educational dreams.
