7-Year-Old Horses Finish 1-2 in $3M Florida Race

Two seven-year-old horses just proved that sometimes the best victories come with a little more gray in your mane.

Skippylongstocking and White Abarrio, both trained by Saffie Joseph Jr., finished first and second in Saturday's $3 million Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream Park in Florida. In a sport where most horses retire by age five or six, these two senior citizens stole the show.

White Abarrio has been competing so long that his gray coat has turned almost completely white. Skippylongstocking, purchased for just $37,000 as a youngster, has now earned over $5.5 million for owner Daniel Alonso.

The victory was especially sweet for Skippylongstocking, who had failed to win a top-tier race in 11 previous attempts over his long career. At 21-1 odds, few believed Saturday would be his day.

"Coming around the turn, he just kept building," said jockey Tyler Gaffalione, a local who grew up in nearby Davie. "He just kept responding."

Joseph had actually considered retiring Skippylongstocking as recently as last month. But when the horse won a race in December, the trainer decided to give him one more chance.

"It was either he was going to show up or he was going to be retired," Joseph said. "He showed up."

In a culture obsessed with youth and quick success, these horses remind us that persistence pays off. Skippylongstocking chased his first elite win for years, facing disappointment after disappointment. But he kept running.

Joseph knows both horses won't race forever. Their careers are winding down, and he'll face the difficult decision of when to let them retire. But for now, these veterans are proving they still have plenty left to give.

The win means everything for a horse who never gave up chasing greatness, even when the odds said his time had passed.
