Aaron Rai's Loss at Myrtle Beach Unlocks PGA Win

Aaron Rai stumbled badly at the Myrtle Beach Classic, blowing a final-round lead and finishing three shots behind the winner. A week later, that loss helped him win the PGA Championship.

Rai shocked the golf world when he ran away from stars like Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, and Scottie Scheffler to claim his first major title at Aronimink. Nothing in his recent form suggested a breakthrough, with just one top-20 finish all year.

At the PGA Championship, Rai found himself struggling again through eight holes of his final round. But this time, he knew exactly how to reset his mind.

He poured in a 33-foot eagle putt at the ninth hole and added birdies at 11 and 13 to pull away. The key moment came at the short par-4 13th, where Rai did what other players couldn't, flying a bunker shot to the back shelf and draining the six-footer.

The victory meant even more when Rai's father Amrik arrived at his home a few days later. Amrik had given up his own dream as a talented tennis player to put clubs in his son's hands, customizing courses and teaching dedication from a young age.

"My dad, he's a very proud man," Rai said. "He doesn't show a huge amount of emotions. But the first evening that I saw him, his hug was a little bit different."

They sat and talked for two hours, father and son finally grasping the weight of what Aaron had achieved. Amrik had missed the win itself, having fallen asleep in his camper van back in the UK, but his presence made the victory feel real.
