Abuja Survivor Rescued After 9 Hours Under Rubble

Nine hours after a building collapsed in Abuja's Gudu district, rescue teams heard signs of life beneath the rubble and pulled a construction worker to safety.

The three-story structure, still under construction behind Gudu Market, came down Saturday morning at 8:30 am, trapping workers beneath tons of concrete and steel. Most of those inside were laborers working on the site.

Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, rushed to the scene and personally attended to the survivor moments after his rescue. He was then transported to hospital for further treatment.

By Saturday evening, rescue teams had recovered 16 people from the debris. Eleven survivors were receiving care at three hospitals: Federal Medical Centre Abuja, Asokoro District Hospital, and Maitama Hospital.

The Bright Side

FCT minister Nyesom Wike immediately directed that all casualties receive free medical treatment, removing financial barriers for injured workers and their families. The directive went into effect right away, ensuring no one had to worry about hospital bills while recovering.

The rescue operation showcased remarkable coordination between multiple agencies working shoulder to shoulder. The National Emergency Management Agency, Federal Fire Service, FCT Fire Service, Police Command, Nigerian Army, Federal Road Safety Corps, and emergency medical services all deployed teams to the site.

Search and rescue operations continued through the night as responders carefully worked through layers of debris. Every hour that passed brought new determination to the teams, who understood that time was critical for anyone still trapped.

Anxious residents gathered near the cordoned site, watching responders navigate the wreckage with precision and care. Their presence reflected the community's concern for the workers and support for the rescue teams.
