Teen Lifeguard Honored at White House for Beach Rescue
A 16-year-old California lifeguard who saved a drowning 10-year-old from rough surf received recognition from President Trump at the White House. The dramatic rescue at Seabright Beach nearly cost young Nathaniel Rai his life.
When Ryder Williams saw a child lose his footing in the California surf last month, he didn't hesitate for even a second.
The 16-year-old lifeguard was watching over Seabright Beach in Santa Cruz on July 25 when 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai got swept away by heavy waves. Williams radioed for help, tossed his equipment, and sprinted toward the struggling boy about 20 yards from his tower.
The rescue came during a high surf advisory, with waves reaching up to 10 feet and breaking dangerously close to shore. Nathaniel lost consciousness during the incident, and his father Sumit Rai believes another two or three seconds would have been too late.
"There's nothing more valuable to me than my children," Sumit told ABC News. "I cannot express sufficient gratitude."
On Monday, Williams and Nathaniel met with President Trump in the Oval Office, where the young lifeguard received what Trump called a "High Civilian Honor" for his bravery.

Why This Inspires
Williams' humble response to all the attention shows the true mark of a hero. He told reporters that saving lives is simply part of his daily job, and he actually performed multiple rescues that same day.
"That's just a part of our daily task," Williams said in a video posted by California State Parks. "We keep the public safe. That's the reason we're on the beach."
The teen shared his gratitude for being able to return Nathaniel safely to his family, adding that lifeguards perform rescues like this every day across the country. His fellow lifeguards stood ready to help during the emergency, showing the teamwork that makes beach safety possible.
For the Rai family, the reunion at the White House brought together the people who made a miracle possible on what could have been their darkest day.
One teenager's quick thinking and dedication to duty gave a 10-year-old boy his whole future back.
