Africa Installs Record 17 Gigawatts of Solar in 2026

Across Africa, a quiet revolution is lighting up homes, schools, and hospitals at a pace no one saw coming just a few years ago.

This year alone, the continent will install 17 gigawatts of solar capacity. That's roughly 100,000 solar panels going up every single day, bringing electricity to communities that have waited generations for reliable power.

The growth is stunning. Solar installations jumped 45% compared to last year, with exports from China to Africa surging between June 2025 and June 2026.

What makes this historic isn't just the numbers. It's how widespread the transformation has become.

Thirty-six out of Africa's 54 countries are installing record amounts of solar this year. Nineteen nations have doubled their solar capacity year over year, spreading clean energy from North Africa's cities to rural villages across the continent.

The electricity generated from 2026's installations alone will produce terawatt hours annually. That accounts for 2.3% of Africa's total electricity generation, exceeding the continent's historic 2.2% average annual demand growth for the first time.
