Alabama Bowling Team Wins First State Title as 4th Seed

A high school bowling team that nobody expected to win just rolled their way into the history books.

The Stanhope Elmore Mustangs from Alabama entered the AHSAA 6-7A state championship tournament on January 30 as the fourth seed. Nobody gave them much of a chance against the top-ranked teams from across the state.

But the Mustangs had other plans. In their first match, they took down top-seeded James Clemens 1,633 to 1,568, stunning the tournament favorites.

In their next match against third-seeded Tuscaloosa County, Stanhope Elmore didn't just win. They demolished their opponents 1,720 to 1,526, setting the highest team match total in state tournament history.
