Five electric arc furnace mills within 30 miles of each other crank out more than 12 million tons of steel annually, more than the county's population could have imagined when cotton was the only crop that mattered.

The solar panels are 100% American-made too, coming from First Solar. The batteries are LG Energy Solution systems assembled in the U.S. with North American cells. Even the tracker systems use domestic steel from the same local mills.

Google signed a 20-year power purchase agreement for the first two phases, making Steel River the largest solar and battery project in the company's global portfolio. A data center 40 miles south in West Memphis needs that power, and Google is betting on Arkansas sunshine to deliver it.

Construction on the first 1.6 gigawatts is already underway, with pile drivers working the fields where soybeans and cotton used to grow. The project's total cost runs north of $4.5 billion, and when it's complete, it will leave California's current record holder in the dust.

The Ripple Effect

For years, critics said an American-made solar supply chain couldn't exist at competitive scale. Steel River just proved them wrong with receipts stamped into every foundation.

The project is pumping $8 million into local communities, including $400,000 for a new playground at Rivercrest School District and energy affordability programs for Arkansas families. But the bigger win is what happens when rural communities stop choosing between their heritage and their future.

Cotton fields became steel mills, and now those mills are building the clean energy infrastructure that will power homes for generations.
