Researchers from Kiel University discovered a rectangular harbor basin measuring roughly 260 by 330 feet buried under layers of silt just south of the ancient sanctuary. For centuries, historians believed Olympic athletes and spectators traveled overland from a distant harbor 14 miles away at Pheia. This finding suggests they sailed right up to the stadium instead.

The team used electromagnetic induction and seismic imaging to peer through 13 to 20 feet of sediment that had hidden the basin for millennia. The discovery also revealed a massive flood protection levee running north to south, standing over nine feet tall. Ancient engineers clearly understood the importance of managing the Alpheios River to keep their harbor and sanctuary functional.
