Arizona's First Tech Week Showcases Student Innovation

Arizona students are about to show the tech world what they're made of at the first-ever AZ Tech Week, a statewide celebration proving that innovation doesn't just happen in Silicon Valley.

Running April 6-12, the weeklong festival will feature over 300 events across Arizona, connecting student creators with successful founders and potential funders. ASU students will showcase everything from cutting-edge game design using high-resolution LED screens to recycled computers headed to families in need.

One standout event features ASU's Endless Games and Learning Lab, where students will demonstrate projects built with Epic Games tools to representatives from the gaming giant. The lab teaches students game-making skills while researching how playing popular games translates into real learning and career opportunities.

But there's a challenge driving this showcase. Arizona students often learn valuable tech skills only to leave the state for jobs elsewhere because few major gaming and tech companies have set up shop here. The lab hopes Epic Games might change that by establishing an Arizona presence after seeing what local talent can do.

Beyond gaming, students will compete for a $10,000 prize at the ASU DevSpace Demo Day pitch competition on April 10. A "Refurb-a-thon" will have tech students giving old computers new life for families who need them, while the ASU Drone Studio will demonstrate the latest in unmanned aircraft technology.

The week includes unexpected gems too: a hike with AI enthusiasts at South Mountain, stargazing at the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory, and a hands-on demo mapping cultural routes along Phoenix's light rail system.
