Aussie Racer Uses AI Trainer to Prep for Le Mans
Australian driver Martin Berry built his own AI personal trainer to get race-ready for one of motorsport's most grueling events. The 24-hour endurance race demands peak physical and mental performance with almost no rest.
Martin Berry isn't just racing against the clock at this weekend's 24 Hours of Le Mans. He's racing with the help of an AI coach he built himself.
The Victorian driver is one of four Australians competing in the legendary French endurance race, which kicks off Sunday at midnight. Berry's racing for Iron Lynx in the LMGT3 category, starting 13th in his class.
Preparing for Le Mans means getting ready for something most athletes never face: performing at your absolute peak for 24 straight hours with minimal breaks. Berry told ABC Sport he turned to artificial intelligence to help him train both body and mind.
"I'm quite into AI these days, so I have built this AI personal trainer that has been guiding me for preparation for Le Mans," he said. The custom program combines strength training with cardio while Berry logs hours in the racing simulator to build muscle memory and find his rhythm.
This is Berry's second crack at Le Mans after finishing 12th in the LMGT3 class last year. The race requires drivers to maintain razor-sharp focus and lightning-fast reflexes while battling fatigue across a full day and night.
Why This Inspires
Berry's approach shows how technology can help humans push beyond their normal limits. Instead of replacing the human element, his AI trainer amplifies it, helping him prepare for a challenge that tests every aspect of endurance racing.
Fellow Aussie Yasser Shahin will also compete in LMGT3, while Jack Doohan and James Allen race in the LMP2 category. But Le Mans isn't just about the driving for Berry.
"It starts with the parade in the town, that's very special," he said. "The level of fans that are here; it's one of the biggest races in the world in terms of fan participation and attendance."
The 94th edition of the race brings together world-class drivers competing on one of motorsport's most famous stages. Berry and his teammates will need every advantage they can get, including his AI-powered training edge, to make it through to Monday's finish line.
