Drilling rig equipment searching for natural hydrogen deposits in rural South Australia landscape

Australia Strikes Underground Hydrogen in Energy Breakthrough

🤯 Mind Blown

Scientists in South Australia have discovered naturally occurring hydrogen deep underground with 97% purity, offering a cleaner alternative to fossil fuels. The state is leading a global exploration boom that could transform how we power industries and cut emissions.

Imagine finding clean fuel just sitting in the ground, waiting to be tapped like oil or natural gas.

That's exactly what's happening in South Australia, where companies are discovering rich deposits of natural hydrogen buried deep underground. Gold Hydrogen recently drilled wells on the Yorke Peninsula and found hydrogen with an incredible 97% purity. Another well near the town of Robe, first drilled back in 1915, contains hydrogen concentrations of about 25%.

This isn't the manufactured "green hydrogen" you might have heard about, which requires electricity to produce. Natural hydrogen forms underground through geological processes and has been doing so for millions of years. Scientists have known about it for over a century, but never found it in quantities worth extracting until now.

The timing couldn't be better. Today, 99% of the world's hydrogen comes from fossil fuels, creating what's called "grey hydrogen." Industries use it for everything from making fertilizer to manufacturing glass, but the production process releases greenhouse gases. Natural hydrogen could change that equation entirely.

South Australia's Energy Minister Tom Koutsantonis calls it "the equivalent of tripping over gold." He's not exaggerating about the potential impact. The state plans to blend natural hydrogen into existing natural gas pipelines at 20 to 30%, cutting emissions without requiring new infrastructure. Industries like steel smelting and manufacturing could use it to dramatically reduce their carbon footprint.

Neil McDonald, who leads Gold Hydrogen, expects to begin proof-of-concept production within 18 to 24 months. His company plans flow testing in the coming weeks to determine if commercial extraction makes sense. If successful, Australia could supply not just domestic demand but also export markets.

The global race is heating up fast. At least 10 to 15 countries, including the US, Canada, and France, have launched exploration programs. Thor Energy CEO Andrew Hume calls it "a bit of a gold rush." His company holds exploration rights across 4,000 square kilometers in South Australia's southeast.

The Ripple Effect

This discovery reaches far beyond Australia's borders. If natural hydrogen proves economically viable, it could accelerate the global shift away from fossil fuels faster than anyone anticipated. Countries currently dependent on imported oil and gas could develop their own clean hydrogen reserves. Heavy industries that are difficult to electrify, like cement and steel production, would finally have a zero-emissions alternative.

The mining costs would be dramatically lower than manufacturing hydrogen or extracting natural gas. That means cleaner energy could actually become cheaper energy, removing one of the biggest barriers to climate action.

Researcher Rachelle Kernen from Adelaide University acknowledges the industry will move in cycles, with periods of intense interest followed by quieter phases. But she's optimistic about where it's heading.

"All of a sudden, it just becomes the norm and the status quo," she said.
