Austria Powers Trains with Solar Farm That Grows Food Too

Austria just flipped the script on renewable energy with a solar farm that does triple duty: powering electric trains, growing organic crops, and protecting local wildlife.

The new 6.6 megawatt facility in Donnerskirchen sits on 17 acres alongside train tracks in Austria's Burgenland region. What makes it special is that the solar panels feed electricity directly into Austrian Federal Railways' power grid while farmers continue growing crops underneath.

The system uses rotating solar trackers that follow the sun throughout the day, generating about 8.3 gigawatt-hours of electricity each year. That's enough to power the equivalent of 32,500 train journeys between Vienna and Eisenstadt, a popular 37-mile route.

Austrian Federal Railways board member Silvia Angelo says feeding power directly into the rail network cuts energy losses and boosts reliability. The move helps the railway reduce its dependence on fossil fuels while strengthening its position as a climate leader in Austria.

The farm belongs to Esterhazy Betriebe AG, which has spent years researching how to make this dual-use concept work. CEO Matthias Grün points out that the setup preserves valuable farmland instead of taking it out of production for solar panels alone.

The arrangement benefits both sides. Crops get protection from harsh sun and weather under the panels. Meanwhile, the plants provide natural cooling that helps the solar system perform better in hot weather.

The Ripple Effect

The project proves renewable energy doesn't have to compete with food production. The design maintains natural water flow in the soil and preserves existing landscape features like ditches and hedges that farmers rely on.

Beyond energy and food, the site includes extensive plantings designed to support native species and maintain biodiversity. Local energy company Burgenland Energie partnered on the project, showing how utilities can work with farmers and transportation networks.

This triple-win approach addresses three major challenges at once: clean energy demand, food security, and habitat protection. As countries worldwide struggle to find space for both solar farms and agriculture, Austria's model offers a practical solution that doesn't force an either-or choice.

The success in Donnerskirchen could inspire similar projects across Europe and beyond, proving that smart design can multiply benefits instead of creating tradeoffs.
