
Bangladesh Turns Jute Waste Into Ink, Saves $245M Annually

A Bangladeshi research team has developed environmentally friendly printing ink from discarded jute sticks that performs just as well as commercial products. The innovation could slash production costs by 90% compared to imported ink, which Bangladesh currently buys almost entirely from China, Japan, Germany, South Korea and the Netherlands.
"We were surprised when we tried it with jute sticks," lead researcher Md Abdul Aziz told Mongabay. "We obtained better-quality ink, and it can reduce the cost by about 10 times compared with the import cost."
Bangladesh is the world's top jute exporter, sometimes producing 1.6 million tons of raw jute annually. After farmers harvest the valuable golden fibers, the leftover sticks become waste. The printing and packaging industries, meanwhile, import nearly all their ink despite Bangladesh's booming manufacturing sector.
The researchers created the ink by heating jute sticks in a specially designed furnace that recycles harmful gases back into the process as fuel instead of releasing them into the air. They ground the resulting carbon into tiny particles just 250 nanometers in size, then mixed them with water-based solutions to create printable ink.

Testing with a standard Canon printer showed the jute-based ink matched commercial black inkjet ink in performance and quality. The ink remained stable over long periods and produced the same deep black color as petroleum-derived products.
The Ripple Effect
The innovation tackles two problems at once. Bangladesh's 15,000 printing presses spend about $163 million yearly on imported ink, while pen manufacturers and office printers add another $82 million. Creating a domestic ink industry from agricultural waste could keep that money in local communities.
The environmental benefits extend beyond recycling waste. Conventional printing ink relies on carbon black, a petroleum product made through energy-intensive processes that generate significant greenhouse gases. Biomass-derived carbon from renewable jute offers a cleaner alternative that turns waste into value.
The research team also developed graphene from jute sticks, raising hopes that Bangladesh could enter the growing global nanomaterials market. What farmers once burned for fuel could become the foundation for advanced industrial materials.
Agricultural waste throughout Bangladesh now looks less like garbage and more like opportunity waiting to be unlocked.
