"We aren't just researching the future inside these walls. We built the future to house it," said Steve Guenther, Carnegie Mellon's assistant vice president for Facilities Management Services. The building represents the university's first Platinum-level certification since they began using LEED standards in 2000.
The center's roof hosts solar panels generating 570 kilowatt hours of electricity. On peak days, the building produces more power than it consumes, feeding clean energy back into Pittsburgh's grid.
The design team transformed a former brownfield site into an industrial-chic research space flooded with natural light. Materials were chosen specifically to improve indoor air quality for the researchers working inside. Bike commuters get their own room with showers, and bus routes connect directly to the building.

Adam DiMenno, who managed the project from its 2020 launch, said sustainability drove every decision. "While we originally planned for Gold certification, the team knew that Platinum was achievable with this facility," he explained. They stayed true to that vision through six years of development.
