Bay City Opens Overnight Drop-In Center for Homeless

When temperatures plunge below freezing in Bay City, Michigan, having a warm place to sleep isn't just about comfort. It's about survival.

The Good Samaritan Rescue Mission opened a new overnight drop-in center on January 14, and it's already becoming a lifeline for people without shelter. In just two weeks, more than 55 individuals have found warmth, safety, and a chance to rest during some of the coldest nights of winter.

"You find yourself with no place to go and shelters are full, you can come here," said Dan Streeter, CEO of Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan. The center welcomes about 15 people each night with a simple approach: just show up.

Located at 713 Ninth Street on the southern portion of the Good Samaritan Rescue Mission, the center opens its doors at 6 p.m. and provides shelter until 8 a.m. the next morning. Inside, guests find rows of chairs, access to showers and washing machines, and sack lunches to start their day.

But the center aims to offer something deeper than a warm room. Staff members use the overnight hours to build trust with guests, many of whom face challenges like chronic homelessness, mental illness, or substance abuse.

"To be able to come into a warm space, know that they're safe, and it allows our staff the chance to build trust and talk to them about what's going on," Streeter explained. The conversations often lead to connections with mental health services, substance abuse programs, housing resources, and basic necessities like clothing.

The Ripple Effect

The Bay City center draws inspiration from a successful model at the Lansing City Rescue Mission. By creating a low-barrier entry point where people can access help without jumping through hoops, the center becomes more than emergency shelter. It becomes a bridge to lasting change.

"Whatever's going on in their life, we're trying to make that transition so they don't have to continue to be out in these elements anymore," Streeter said. Each night someone spends inside represents not just safety from the cold, but an opportunity to connect with resources that could transform their circumstances.

As word spreads about the center, organizers are already planning how to adapt and expand to meet growing demand. They're also calling for volunteers to support the mission's work, recognizing that community involvement strengthens the impact they can make.

For 55 people and counting, this winter looks a little less harsh because someone decided warmth and dignity should be available to everyone.
