The Bernera Community Association, which runs a vital community center on Great Bernera island, has raised £177,000 through more than 11,000 donations. The charity found itself in an unexpected legal battle after Claire Kellerman, daughter of late Hollywood actress Sally Kellerman, sued them over their policy regarding dogs in their community café.

Kellerman claimed the charity discriminated against assistance dog users. The charity, which recorded annual costs of £195,029 in their latest accounts, suddenly faced mounting legal expenses that threatened their ability to keep serving their island community.

Last month, the charity made an urgent public appeal to help save the community center. The response exceeded anything they imagined.

"We are completely overwhelmed by the kindness and generosity shown to us," the charity said in a statement. "The fact we have now reached £177,000 is an incredible achievement and is entirely down to the generosity of the public."
