Indian village women learning to write signatures during literacy training session in Bihar

Bihar Leader Teaches 80% of Village Women to Sign Names

🦸 Hero Alert

In Bihar's Kukraun village, nearly 80% of women can now sign their own names instead of using thumbprints, thanks to one leader who turned her own incomplete education into purpose. Afsana Begum also built a market that created 120 businesses and brought income to 70% of local women.

For most women in Kukraun village, a thumbprint was the only way to prove who they were. Today, nearly 80% can write their own signatures.

This transformation came from Afsana Begum, a local leader who never forgot what it felt like to be left behind. She finished eighth grade in her village of Khanuha, where girls' education typically ended early because the nearest schools were too far away.

When Afsana won her 2021 Panchayat election in Bihar's Purnea district, she knew exactly what needed to change. She started with the basics: teaching women to write their own names.

The training sessions were simple but powerful. Women learned to sign documents, open bank accounts, and handle official work without depending on anyone else.

At least six girls from the village now work as trained teachers in government schools. Several others are pursuing higher studies, traveling the distances their mothers never could.

But Afsana understood that empowerment needed more than literacy. It needed income.

Women in Kukraun West walked nearly 12 kilometers to reach the nearest market. The journey ate up entire days and left little time or energy for earning money.

Afsana established a weekly market right in the village. What started as a practical solution became an economic engine.

The Ripple Effect

More than 120 small shops now operate in the local market, many owned and run by women. They sell vegetables, household goods, and locally sourced products within walking distance of home.

The market eliminated the grueling commute and created jobs where none existed before. Around 70% of women in the Panchayat now earn their own income.

The transformation didn't happen through grand announcements or sweeping reforms. It grew from understanding what women actually needed: a school close enough to attend, a market close enough to reach, and the dignity of signing their own names.

In Kukraun, change looks like a signature instead of a thumbprint, a shop instead of a long walk, and daughters going to college instead of stopping at eighth grade.
