BMW's Electric M3 Promises 900 HP in 2025

BMW just announced the end of an era and the beginning of something potentially more thrilling.

The automaker confirmed that 2027 will be the final year for the gas-powered G80 M3, closing out the sports car's sixth generation. Production of the current model ends in February 2027, leaving about 18 months before a new gas version arrives in summer 2028.

But here's where it gets exciting. BMW isn't just killing the gas M3. They're replacing it with an all-electric version that promises to blow the original out of the water.

The electric M3 launches next year with four electric motors, one at each wheel. Early estimates suggest it will deliver between 800 and 900 horsepower, nearly double the 473 horsepower from the current gas model.

BMW built the new M3 from scratch on its latest M eDrive architecture. The company says this sixth-generation platform offers 30% longer range and 30% faster charging than previous electric systems.

The performance EV will draw power from a battery pack with over 100 kWh of usable energy. Based on the new 2027 i3 platform, it should deliver around 440 miles of EPA-rated range, with WLTP estimates reaching 559 miles.

The Bright Side

This transition shows how electric vehicles are finally matching and exceeding their gas counterparts where it matters most to enthusiasts: pure performance. The instant torque from four electric motors means faster acceleration than any gas engine could achieve.

BMW is even adding features that driving purists will appreciate. Like Hyundai's performance EVs, the electric M3 will offer simulated gear shifts, various drive modes, and custom sound profiles to maintain that visceral driving experience.

The standard electric i3 already produces 463 horsepower from just two motors. With four motors and M-specific tuning, the M3 EV could redefine what a performance sedan can do while producing zero tailpipe emissions.

This isn't about sacrificing fun for the environment anymore. It's about getting the best of both worlds: heart-pounding performance and a cleaner future for everyone who loves driving.
