Britain's Solar Power Hits Record 14.4% in July 2026

Solar panels are officially having their moment in Britain, and the numbers tell a story of remarkable transformation.

In July 2026, solar power generated 14.4% of all electricity across Great Britain, shattering the previous record of 12.4% set just two months earlier. Just one year ago, that figure stood at only 9.6%. The sun delivered 3.2 terawatt-hours of electricity last month alone, enough to power millions of homes.

The surge comes from two powerful forces working together. First, solar installations are multiplying faster than ever, with 142,536 new systems added in the first half of 2026 alone. Most are rooftop panels on homes, driven by falling costs and the real savings families see on their energy bills each month.

Second, battery storage technology has gotten dramatically cheaper and better. Grid-scale batteries dropped in price by 40% between 2017 and early 2025, while lithium-ion batteries became 90% cheaper between 2010 and 2024. These batteries now store excess solar power during sunny days and release it when the sun goes down, making renewable energy far more reliable.

On July 12th, during clear skies at the end of a heatwave, solar power hit 18.8% of Britain's total electricity generation for the day. Between 10:30am and midday, solar panels were generating 44% of the country's power, reaching a peak output of 15,427 megawatts.

The transformation goes beyond solar alone. Renewable sources now account for roughly 60% of Britain's electricity, up from just 3% in the year 2000. That shift means British households and businesses are far less exposed to volatile global energy prices and the economic shocks that come with them.

The Ripple Effect

What started as a marginal power source fifteen years ago has become a major player reshaping how an entire nation keeps the lights on. Every new rooftop installation adds up to national energy security, and every improvement in battery storage makes the whole system more resilient.

The progress isn't just theoretical. In 2025, the UK opened Cleve Hill Solar Farm in Kent, the country's largest at 373 megawatts of capacity. That same year, solar generation jumped 34.2% compared to 2024, pushed forward by both sunny weather and surging installations.

Chris Hewett, Chief Executive of Solar Energy UK, captured the shift perfectly: solar power has gone from marginal to major in just over a decade. Michael Shanks, UK Minister for Energy, pointed out that generating more electricity at home protects people from global price shocks that can devastate household budgets.

The sun is proving to be Britain's most reliable energy partner, and the partnership is just getting started.
