British Cop Saves Nashville Officer's Life on Vacation

Taylor Johanson had been in Nashville for barely 10 minutes when he spotted something terrifying on the I-440 exit ramp: a police officer pinned face-down on the ground, fighting for his life.

The 34-year-old sergeant from Kent, England, was driving his rental Jeep on May 7 when he saw Officer Peter Kinsey being brutally assaulted. The suspect was head-butting, punching, and biting the officer while grabbing for his holstered gun.

Johanson didn't hesitate. He stopped his car, rushed over, and tackled the 43-year-old suspect off the officer.

"Natural instinct kicked in," Johanson told reporters. His girlfriend Emily, also a police constable, immediately called for backup while he held the attacker down.

The situation was even more dangerous than it looked. The suspect had already managed to get his finger into the trigger guard and fired a round from Kinsey's holstered pistol during the six-minute assault.

Officer Kinsey had stopped to check on the pedestrian walking along the dangerous exit ramp, but the man ignored commands and attacked. For six agonizing minutes, Kinsey fought to keep his weapon away from the attacker while pinned face-down on the pavement.

"It is probably the closest near-death experience I can say I have had," Kinsey later said. "I knew he was going for my gun."

With Johanson restraining the suspect, Kinsey was finally able to deploy his taser and handcuff the man. The visiting sergeant had just saved an American officer's life on what was supposed to be a relaxing six-day family vacation.

The timing seemed almost miraculous. Johanson and his girlfriend had pulled over minutes earlier to queue up some music. Without that brief stop, they would have driven past the life-or-death struggle.

"Six minutes in that situation is horrendous," Johanson reflected. "If I had driven away and the officer had died, I don't think I would be able to forgive myself."

Nashville Police Chief John Drake personally thanked Johanson at the station, presenting him with challenge coins, a police blanket, and an engraved watch typically reserved for officers with 30 years of service.

"I believe he likely saved our officer's life," Chief Drake said. "He miraculously appeared when Officer Kinsey needed help."
