Bull and Donkey in Ethiopia Share Remarkable Bond

Love and companionship can flourish in the most unexpected corners of the animal kingdom. While pausing during a research trek across an Ethiopian plateau, two ecologists witnessed an affectionate partnership that is expanding what science knows about animal connections.

The story centers on Achille, a domestic bull, and Patroclo, a male donkey. Named after legendary ancient companions, the two animals belong to different local owners but actively seek each other out every day in the shared pasture.

Researchers André Beirão da Cruz and Martina Francesconi from the University of Pisa first spotted the duo during a routine field survey. What began as a surprising observation quickly turned into a fascinating study published in the journal Current Biology.

Over multiple observation periods, the scientists recorded dozens of intimate interactions between the pair. Beyond frequent mating displays, Achille and Patroclo spent hours gently nuzzling, licking, and resting side by side in the sunshine.

Most remarkably, the donkey showed fierce loyalty to his bovine partner. Patroclo welcomed Achille with open affection while consistently driving away any other bulls that ventured too close.

Senior study author Elisabetta Palagi explains that scientists often miss these unique connections by sticking too closely to rigid assumptions. This discovery shows that social relationships between domestic animals can be deeply reciprocal, selective, and voluntary.
