Gent Steel Plant Captures Over 90% of Carbon
Engineers in Belgium successfully captured more than 90 percent of carbon emissions during a 4,500-hour trial at an active steel plant. The breakthrough proves that existing industrial facilities can dramatically clean up production today.
Clean skies and modern industry are finally joining hands in a historic step toward a healthier world. In a landmark breakthrough for heavy manufacturing, engineers in Belgium have captured more than 90 percent of the carbon dioxide escaping from an active steel plant.
A collaborative team from ArcelorMittal, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and BHP completed the first phase of this ambitious project at the Gent steel facility. Over the course of 4,500 continuous hours, their pilot system trapped greenhouse gas under real, demanding factory conditions.
Steel builds our bridges, wind turbines, and hospital frameworks, yet producing it requires intense heat and energy. Finding practical ways to clean up blast furnaces gives the entire sector an immediate path toward sustainability.
The team deployed specialized chemical solvent technology from Mitsubishi, which washes blast furnace exhaust to isolate carbon dioxide from other gases. Even in an environment filled with dust and sulfur compounds, the capture mechanism operated smoothly month after month.
Mining leader BHP reported that the captured carbon achieved an astonishing 99.9 percent purity level. Such high purity matters tremendously because it allows industries to safely store the gas underground or recycle it into valuable materials.

Based on these triumphant trial results, company leaders calculate that expanding the setup across the facility could reduce the site's carbon emissions intensity by up to 24 percent. That shift will slash the environmental impact of hot-rolled steel leaving the factory gates.
Building on this momentum, the partners are already designing their next operational test. They plan to tackle gases released by the hot strip mill, where fiery furnaces reheat steel slabs for rolling.
The Ripple Effect
The iron and steel sector accounts for roughly seven percent of global energy emissions, making every efficiency breakthrough a major victory for our planet. Because this technology attaches directly to existing equipment, steelmakers can modernize active facilities right now instead of waiting decades to build costly new plants.
This success also provides a shining blueprint for other heavy industries, showing that commercial rivals can unite to solve global climate challenges. When innovative engineering meets bold collaboration, solutions that once felt impossible become standard practice.
With every ton of carbon safely captured, the dream of truly green steel comes one giant step closer to reality.
