BYD's 5-Minute EV Chargers Launch in Europe and UK

Imagine charging your electric car as quickly as filling up at a gas station, and paying less for it too.

That's the promise BYD is delivering on with its new Flash Charging stations, which just went live in Germany and the UK. The Chinese EV giant's breakthrough technology can charge compatible vehicles from 10% to 70% battery in just five minutes.

BYD's chargers pack up to 1,500 kilowatts of power, three times more than Tesla's latest V4 Superchargers. A full charge from 10% to 97% takes only nine minutes, transforming what used to be a coffee break into a quick pit stop.

The price point makes the innovation even sweeter. BYD UK manager Bono Ge told reporters the company aims to charge around 50 pence per kilowatt hour, significantly cheaper than Tesla Superchargers and other fast charging networks like Ionity.

The company achieves these lower prices through smart energy management. Flash Chargers draw power from batteries that charge overnight during off-peak hours when electricity costs less, then distribute that stored energy throughout the day to more vehicles than traditional chargers can serve.

Any electric vehicle with a standard CCS charge port can use the stations, though only BYD vehicles with the new Blade Battery 2.0 can access maximum charging speeds. The first compatible model, the luxury Denza Z9 GT, is now available in Europe starting at €115,000.

The Ripple Effect

BYD is already partnering with supermarkets and retailers across Europe to install Flash Chargers in their parking lots, making ultra-fast charging accessible where people already shop. By the end of 2026, the company plans 300 stations across the UK and 3,000 throughout Europe.

The technology even performs in extreme cold, adding only three minutes to charging time in temperatures as low as negative 30 degrees Celsius. That means drivers in northern climates can still recharge from 20% to 97% in just 12 minutes during harsh winters.

Early adopters in the UK get 18 months of free charging with their Denza purchase, giving them plenty of time to experience the convenience that could finally erase range anxiety for good.
