BYD's New EV Battery Charges to 70% in Just 5 Minutes
Electric vehicle maker BYD just cracked the code on one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption: charging time. Their new battery technology charges almost as fast as pumping gas.
Imagine pulling into a charging station and getting your electric car back on the road in the time it takes to grab a coffee. That future just became reality.
Chinese automaker BYD unveiled its second-generation Blade Battery on March 6, 2026, and the numbers sound almost too good to be true. At room temperature, the battery charges from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. A near-full charge to 97% takes only nine minutes.
Even more impressive? The technology works in brutal conditions. At negative 30 degrees Celsius (negative 22 Fahrenheit), the battery still charges to 97% in just 12 minutes. That means drivers in freezing climates won't be stranded waiting for slow charges on winter road trips.
BYD Chairman Wang Chuanfu announced the battery delivers 777 kilometers of driving range (about 483 miles). Premium models using the technology will exceed 1,000 kilometers, or roughly 621 miles, on a single charge. That rivals and even surpasses many gas-powered vehicles.

The company isn't just making better batteries. They're building the infrastructure to support them. BYD's FLASH Charging network currently includes 4,000 stations across China. By the end of 2026, that number will jump to 20,000 stations, with 2,000 specifically located on highways for long-distance travelers.
Ten new BYD models will feature the advanced battery across all the company's brands. Prices range from 155,000 yuan (about $22,472) for the Song Ultra EV to 1.3 million yuan for the premium Yangwang U8L. The batteries have already passed and exceeded China's national safety standards.
The Ripple Effect
This breakthrough tackles the two biggest concerns keeping people from switching to electric vehicles: range anxiety and charging time. When charging takes less time than a typical bathroom and snack break on a road trip, the excuse for sticking with gas gets a lot weaker.
The technology could accelerate the global shift away from fossil fuels faster than anyone predicted. As other manufacturers race to match or beat these charging speeds, consumers win with better options and our planet wins with cleaner air.
BYD is proving that the electric future doesn't require sacrifice or compromise.
