She designed a microscopic chip component called a resonator that stores recovered energy for later reuse. "It's really a glorified pendulum," she says.

The design didn't come easy. During the brutal winter of 2022 in Iowa, she spent weeks in a basement apartment covering whiteboards with circuit schematics while the wind chill outside hit negative 40 degrees.
When the solution finally clicked weeks later in Las Vegas, it felt less like a eureka moment and more like gradual relief. "I'm not completely out of my depth," she remembers thinking.
The Ripple Effect
If Vaire's technology scales up, the impact could be massive. Data centers currently consume about 1% of global electricity. Making them dramatically more efficient could save enough power to light millions of homes.
The benefits extend beyond environmental wins. More efficient chips mean longer battery life for phones and laptops, less money spent cooling server farms, and more computing power in the same energy budget.
Igor Markov, a researcher in electronic design automation, calls the work "something interesting" but notes it's early stage. The company will need increasingly realistic demonstrations to attract industry support.
Earley and her team have already raised over $12 million and hired reversible computing pioneer Michael Frank as a senior scientist. Now they're tackling the challenge of making their radically different chips fit into familiar devices and manufacturing systems.
She's not interested in making incremental improvements to existing technology. "I want to tackle every part of how computers are built and rethink it in these terms," Earley says.
The pendulum is swinging toward a more efficient future.
