This Camper Turns Small Vans Into Full Homes With King Beds

Imagine turning your everyday minivan into a spacious home with a full bathroom and a bed bigger than most people have in their actual houses. That's exactly what Italian startup Cubivan unveiled at the 2026 Caravan Salon in Germany, and it's turning heads for all the right reasons.

The Cubivan Camping System starts by sliding out from the back of a small van, much like other camper extensions. But then the magic really happens: the module continues expanding both up and down until it creates a full standing-height room that reaches all the way to the ground.

Inside this expanded space, a complete kitchen rotates into place with a stove and sink, while a portable toilet emerges from a lower cabinet. The system even includes a shower, transforming the modest setup into a fully functional wet bathroom. Best of all, founder Florian Haller designed the entire expansion to work manually with simple cranks and strut-assisted openings, so no electrical hookups or muscle strain required.

But Cubivan didn't stop there. The system includes a separate hard-sided pod that sits on the van's roof and folds flat while driving. When you reach your campsite, it expands into a four-walled bedroom with a massive 79 by 79 inch mattress, larger than a standard king size.

The entire transformation essentially turns a basic van into a stationary home with separate living spaces. Yet it all folds back quickly when it's time to hit the road again, returning the vehicle to its original footprint for easy driving between destinations.

The Bright Side

What makes this design particularly clever is its flexibility for everyday life. When the camping trip ends, owners can completely remove the kitchen and bathroom module and store it at home. The van then returns to being a regular family vehicle with all its seats and cargo space intact, ready for school runs and grocery trips.

Cubivan is currently working on final approvals for an integrated pop-up roof design that will include interior access and add just four inches to the van's height when closed. This would make the system even more practical for daily use while maintaining all the camping functionality.

The innovation shows how creative engineering can solve real problems for outdoor enthusiasts who don't want to invest in a dedicated RV or sacrifice their daily driver. Sometimes the best solutions come from thinking outside the box, or in this case, by making the box unfold in surprisingly useful ways.
