Cancer Patients Keep Chemo Going During Radiation Therapy

For cancer patients fighting stage IV disease, every week of uninterrupted treatment can make a life-saving difference. A breakthrough study from the University of Kentucky shows that a precise form of radiation therapy can be safely delivered alongside high-dose chemotherapy without any treatment breaks.

The research focused on stereotactic ablative radiotherapy, or SABR, which delivers powerful, targeted doses of radiation that destroy cancer cells. Unlike surgery or other interventional procedures that typically require patients to pause chemotherapy for weeks, SABR lets them continue fighting without delay.

Dr. Mark Bernard, a radiation oncologist at UK Markey Cancer Center, led the study examining six patients with various types of stage IV cancers that had spread to one to five sites. Each patient received SABR during their "off week" from chemotherapy when drug levels naturally drop, reducing the risk of side effects from combining treatments.

The results exceeded expectations. Not one patient experienced serious side effects from the combination therapy, and all continued their cancer treatment without interruption.

"SABR offers an option that allows patients to continue their chemotherapy uninterrupted," said Bernard. "For patients with limited metastatic disease, avoiding treatment delays can make a real difference."

The timing matters more than most people realize. When cancer treatment stops for surgery or other procedures, tumors can use those weeks to progress and spread. For patients already fighting advanced cancer, losing even a few weeks of chemotherapy could mean losing ground in their battle.
