Cannabis Pain Drug Gets FDA Fast-Track Over Opioids

The timing couldn't be more critical. Chronic pain affects over one billion people worldwide, with more than 60 million Americans living with constant discomfort. Despite decades of research, opioids remain the primary option for many patients, carrying well-documented risks of addiction, overdose, and life-altering side effects.

This FDA designation does more than speed up one company's approval process. It signals a fundamental shift in how regulators view plant-based medicines for serious conditions. For researchers developing similar treatments, this decision creates a proven pathway through the approval maze.

VERTANICAL has already launched an additional Phase 3 trial specifically for U.S. patients with chronic low back pain. The company expects initial results in 2027 and plans to submit a full application to the FDA in 2028. Meanwhile, European approval could arrive within weeks, giving international patients access first.
