CAR-T Therapy Cures Woman With 3 Autoimmune Diseases

A 47-year-old woman in Germany who could barely get out of bed is now living a normal life without medication after receiving a groundbreaking treatment for three severe autoimmune diseases.

She needed up to three blood transfusions daily and had tried nine different treatments without success. Her doctors at University Hospital Erlangen say she was running out of options when they offered her CAR-T cell therapy.

The woman's immune system had turned against her own body in three dangerous ways. Her B cells were producing antibodies that destroyed her red blood cells, attacked her platelets, and targeted proteins that help bind fats in her blood.

"Her disease got completely out of hand" and became "very life-threatening," says Dr. Fabian Müller, the haematologist who helped treat her. He had never seen someone with this particular combination of three autoimmune diseases before.

Traditional treatments like steroids hadn't worked. These medications suppress the entire immune system and come with serious risks of infection.

So doctors tried something different. They removed some of her T cells and engineered them in a lab to hunt down and destroy only the troublemaking B cells.

Within a month of receiving the treatment, her red blood cell levels returned to normal. Today, she's completely symptom-free and medication-free.

The Bright Side

CAR-T therapy has been saving lives in cancer treatment for years, but using it for autoimmune diseases represents a whole new frontier. The treatment works because the engineered cells can live and multiply in the body for years, sometimes even a decade.

Carl June, an immunologist who pioneered CAR-T therapy for cancer, says the woman would have had a "terrible" quality of life without this treatment, "if she would even be alive."

The success offers hope for millions of people living with autoimmune diseases who don't respond to conventional treatments. Unlike medications that must be taken daily and suppress the entire immune system, this single infusion precisely targets the problem cells.

For this woman, the three-hour ambulance ride to the specialized clinic changed everything. She went from being bedridden and transfusion-dependent to living a full, active life again.
