CATL Lands 60 GWh Sodium Battery Order, Largest Ever

Battery manufacturing leader CATL just landed a game-changing deal that could make clean energy storage more affordable for everyone. The company signed a 60 GWh sodium-ion battery agreement with Chinese system integrator HyperStrong, marking the largest order of its kind in history.

This isn't just another business deal. It's proof that sodium-ion batteries have finally overcome the technical hurdles that kept them stuck in research labs for years.

CATL has poured nearly $1.5 billion into sodium-ion research since 2016. That investment is now paying off with batteries that can actually compete with the lithium technology that powers everything from electric cars to solar farms.

The new batteries pack over 300 amp-hours of capacity with an energy density around 160 watt-hours per kilogram. They can handle extreme temperatures from negative 40 to 70 degrees Celsius and last more than 15,000 charge cycles while keeping 80% of their capacity.

Here's what makes sodium special: it uses no cobalt, no nickel, and aluminum foil instead of copper. Those changes could slash costs by 30 to 40% compared to lithium batteries.

Timing matters too. Lithium battery prices jumped 20% over the past six months as supplies tightened and demand surged. Mainstream lithium cells that cost roughly $50 per kilowatt-hour last fall are now significantly more expensive.

CATL designed its new sodium cells to fit the same dimensions as its existing 587 amp-hour lithium batteries. Customers can switch between technologies without redesigning their entire systems or retooling manufacturing lines.

The batteries passed nail penetration tests, crush tests, and overcharge tests without catching fire or experiencing thermal runaway. That safety record matters when storing massive amounts of energy near homes and businesses.

The Ripple Effect

This deal represents more than technical achievement. It's about making renewable energy storage accessible to more communities worldwide, especially in developing regions where cost remains the biggest barrier to clean power.

Sodium is abundant and cheap compared to lithium, which requires extensive mining operations often concentrated in just a few countries. Widespread sodium battery production could democratize energy storage and reduce dependence on volatile commodity markets.

The three-year partnership between CATL and HyperStrong will supply enough battery capacity to power thousands of homes, data centers, and renewable energy installations. Each installation brings communities closer to reliable, round-the-clock clean energy.

As production scales up and costs drop, sodium batteries could unlock solar and wind projects that pencil out today. Rural hospitals could keep lights on during outages, and schools could run on stored sunshine.
