CD Sales Surge 46% as Music Lovers Rediscover Physical Media

The CD is back, and music fans couldn't be happier about it.

In the first half of 2026, Americans bought 17.5 million CDs, rocketing up 46% from the same period in 2025, according to the Recording Industry Association of America. Even more impressive: the dollars spent on CDs jumped nearly 59% to reach $171 million.

This comeback is especially sweet considering CD sales actually dropped 22% from 2024 to 2025. Many industry watchers thought the format was finished.

Research firm Luminate discovered something fascinating about who's driving this renaissance. Gen Z and millennials are snapping up special edition albums, particularly from K-Pop acts like BTS, and treating them as treasured collectibles. About half of CD buyers don't even own a player yet.

Vinyl records are riding the same wave of nostalgia and appreciation for physical music. Sales climbed 21% to 26.5 million units in the same period. Other physical formats like cassettes and special editions surged even more dramatically, jumping 73% to 1.6 million units.

The boom reflects something deeper than just collecting. People are craving tangible connections to the music they love. They want album art they can hold, liner notes they can read, and something real to display on their shelves.

Why This Inspires

This resurgence shows that convenience doesn't always win. Sometimes people choose beauty, nostalgia, and permanence over pure practicality. Young people especially are rejecting the idea that everything must be digital and disposable.

The CD revival also proves that old and new can coexist beautifully. Streaming revenue still grew by 5% to $4.9 billion, dwarfing physical media sales. People aren't abandoning their playlists. They're simply adding another dimension to how they experience music.

Music lovers are voting with their wallets for a world where streaming and collecting both have a place.
