Modern sustainable home in Chennai with ocean views and eco-friendly architecture features

Chennai Couple Builds 4,000 Sq Ft Eco-Home in 4 Months

🤯 Mind Blown

A young couple in Chennai designed their dream wedding venue and forever home using sustainable materials that keep rooms naturally cool while cutting concrete use by half. Their ocean-facing house proves green architecture can be stunning without sacrificing style.

When Amritha and Harshit got married in August 2021, they didn't just exchange vows. They moved into a home they built around a tree her grandfather planted 40 years ago.

The 24-year-old real estate professional knew exactly what she wanted: a sustainable house that honored the beach cleanups of her childhood. She contacted architect Ammaar Aziz Chowdry with one simple request: make it green in every way possible.

What happened next surprised everyone. The team completed the entire 4,000 square foot home in just four months, from September 2021 to January 2022.

The Gully Home sits on a beach-facing plot in Chennai's Thiruvanmiyur neighborhood. Its east-facing position offers gorgeous ocean views but also intense sun exposure, so Ammaar got creative with ancient cooling techniques.

The walls use porotherm blocks with half-cut bricks on both sides, creating 350 mm thick double-insulated barriers that trap heat before it enters. Naturally polished kota stone floors reflect sunlight while bedroom floors feature terrazzo made from recycled marble scraps and glass chips.

Even the ceiling tells a sustainability story. Since metal would corrode from the salty ocean air, the team layered terracotta under poured concrete, turning clay into natural insulation while drastically cutting concrete use.

The windows open two ways: glass shutters swing inward while aluminum shutters with adjustable louvres open outward. Residents can control exactly how much ocean breeze flows through at different times of day.

The house rises 1.5 meters through the garden side while the parking area dips 1.5 meters down. This steep slope inspired the home's name and ensures even ground floor rooms catch ocean views.

The Ripple Effect

The couple wanted space for parties and their four dogs, so Ammaar designed open sightlines throughout. An open staircase connects every room, and you can see almost the entire house from any corner.

The first sketch drawn on butter paper matched the final build exactly. That grandfather's tree now divides the property perfectly, with garden on one side and parking on the other.

Above the central room, a swimming pool provides extra cooling. Every design choice served double duty: beautiful and functional, modern and sustainable.

Young couples across India are watching. The Gully Home proves you don't need to choose between your environmental values and your dream home.
