Jiangsu Province in eastern China reached 100 gigawatts of solar capacity in July 2026, becoming the first provincial region in the country to hit this milestone. Solar now powers more than 38% of Jiangsu's electricity, making it the province's largest single energy source.
What makes this achievement remarkable isn't just the size. It's how they did it.
Nearly 70% of Jiangsu's solar panels sit on rooftops rather than in sprawling solar farms. The province installed 69 gigawatts on factory buildings, public structures, and rural homes across one of China's most crowded regions.
Jiangsu faced a challenge that many developed areas share: not enough empty land for traditional solar farms. So officials got creative, coordinating village-wide rooftop installations and transforming industrial parks into solar generators.
State Grid Jiangsu developed AI tools and satellite imaging to identify which rooftops could support panels and how much power the local grid could handle. The system worked so well that another 36 gigawatts of rooftop capacity is already available for future projects.

The province isn't stopping at 100 gigawatts. Officials set targets of 120 gigawatts by 2030 and 160 gigawatts by 2035, focusing on transportation infrastructure and public buildings next.
Jiangsu is also pioneering offshore solar installations, reaching 2 gigawatts by the end of 2025. Several pilot projects are testing combinations of floating solar panels with other energy resources.

Other Chinese provinces are watching closely. While Shandong Province also approached 100 gigawatts, it relied more heavily on land-based solar farms, a luxury not every region enjoys.
The next challenge for Jiangsu involves managing all this midday solar power through grid upgrades, battery storage, and smarter electricity markets. But proving that crowded regions can generate massive clean energy marks a turning point for urban renewable development everywhere.
