UK Solar Bonds Could Cut Energy Bills by £250 Yearly
A new proposal could make solar panels affordable for everyone in the UK through government-backed loans at half the current interest rate. Both households and investors would benefit from the innovative "solar bonds" scheme.
Solar panels are about to get more affordable for millions of UK families who've been priced out of clean energy savings.
A groundbreaking proposal from the Common Wealth thinktank suggests the government could offer "solar bonds" that would slash loan interest rates in half. Instead of paying 9% to 10% on commercial loans, families could finance their solar panels at just 4% to 5%.
The scheme works beautifully for everyone involved. Households would repay their £5,000 to £10,000 solar installation over 25 years through a small addition to their energy bills. The loan would stay with the property if sold, passing seamlessly to the next owner.
People with spare cash could invest in these solar bonds just like premium bonds or national savings. Their investment would earn 4% to 5% interest while directly funding solar installations for other families.
Donal Brown, the lead researcher from Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, estimates the program could save households £250 annually on energy bills. That's a significant relief as energy prices are forecast to hit £1,729 per year this October.

The timing couldn't be better. Solar installations are already booming across the UK, with nearly 150,000 panels installed in just the first six months of 2026. That's one installation every 74 seconds.
Current high-interest commercial loans eat up most of the energy savings for the first decade, making solar panels impractical for lower-income families despite the long-term benefits. This proposal would change that equation entirely.
The Ripple Effect
When clean energy becomes accessible to everyone regardless of income, entire communities transform. Lower energy bills mean families have more money for food, education, and emergencies. Clean energy reduces carbon emissions while creating jobs in installation and maintenance. Government-backed financing could also drive down installation costs across the market.
Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh is already moving forward with zero and low-interest loans for solar panels, batteries, and heat pumps that could save families £550 yearly. The government is also making plug-in solar panels easier to install on balconies and outdoor spaces for people without traditional rooftops.
Solar Energy UK welcomed the bonds proposal as another tool to accelerate what they're calling the "rooftop revolution."
Britain's sunny spring and summer have shown what's possible when clean energy meets smart financing.
