Cities are also getting smarter about which trees to plant. Germany is testing 45 drought-tolerant species at more than 220 locations, gathering data on how different trees thrive under climate stress.
The CITREE database now categorizes almost 400 species of woody plants, sortable by over 50 features including drought tolerance, the key characteristic cities need for a warming world. Urban planners follow the 10-20-30 rule: no more than 10% of any one species, 20% of a single genus, or 30% of any family to prevent disease from wiping out entire populations.
