College Goalie Built Hockey Camp Serving 175 Kids

While most college athletes struggle to balance practices and homework, Maggie Malecha added building an entire youth hockey program to her to-do list.

The former University of St. Thomas goaltender just received the 2026 College Hockey Inc. Scholarship, a $2,500 award recognizing student-athletes who support the next generation of players. Malecha earned the honor by creating something her hometown of Northfield, Minnesota desperately needed: affordable hockey opportunities for local kids.

During the summer of 2024, Malecha launched a hockey camp completely from scratch. She coordinated ice time, designed age-appropriate drills, hired staff, and managed every detail while still training as a Division I athlete. That first summer, 120 kids showed up.

Word spread fast. By summer 2025, enrollment jumped to 175 young players.

Malecha didn't just build a successful program. She built an accessible one, creating scholarship opportunities to ensure cost wouldn't keep families away. For a sport often criticized as too expensive, her commitment to affordability opened doors for kids who might have been left on the sidelines.

Her dedication to youth hockey extended beyond summer camps. During her senior season, Malecha joined Northfield High School as a goalie coach for both the girls' and boys' teams, volunteering her expertise while completing her exercise science degree.

The Ripple Effect

Malecha's impact reaches far beyond the rink. Those 175 kids aren't just learning hockey skills—they're discovering teamwork, confidence, and perseverance. Some are probably experiencing their first taste of organized sports, thanks to the scholarship spots Malecha carved out.

Her model proves that one dedicated person can create lasting change in their community. What started as a college student's summer project has become a thriving program that will likely serve Northfield families for years to come.

The scholarship, presented by JLG Architects and named for passionate hockey supporter Lonnie Laffen, couldn't have found a better recipient. College Hockey Inc. Executive Director Sean Hogan praised Malecha's dedication to volunteerism and community service, calling her the embodiment of a collegiate student-athlete.

Now graduated with her bachelor's degree and a three-time WCHA All-Academic Team selection under her belt, Malecha plans to begin her teaching career. She's trading the college rink for the classroom, where she'll continue shaping young lives.

From 120 campers to 175 in just one year, Malecha proved that passion and hard work can transform a community—one young hockey player at a time.
